Code of Conduct

Building a Community Where Kindness Comes First

Most online communities are places people pass through. Conversations are rushed, misunderstandings spread quickly, and people often leave feeling unseen.

At KindnessGuild, we believe a community can be something more.

We believe technology should strengthen human connection—not replace it. Every conversation, every project, every act of service should make someone feel a little more welcomed, a little more understood, and a little less alone.

When you join KindnessGuild, you become part of a community dedicated to creating genuine human connection through kindness, collaboration, and respect.

This Code of Conduct isn't simply a set of rules. It's our shared commitment to one another.

Our Guiding Principles

Our community is built on four guiding principles:

  1. Lead with Kindness — Every interaction is an opportunity to make someone feel welcome
  2. Protect Our Shared Spaces — Create and maintain an environment where everyone feels safe
  3. Turn Conflict into Growth — Transform disagreement into understanding and learning
  4. Choose Compassion Over Convenience — Act with kindness even when it requires effort

These principles guide every interaction across KindnessGuild. No document can predict every situation, so we ask everyone to act not only within the letter of these guidelines, but also within their spirit.

If someone's actions don't reflect these values, we'll first help them understand the impact of their behavior. If they choose not to improve, we may limit or remove their participation to protect the community.

Lead with Kindness

Every interaction is an opportunity to make someone feel welcome.

We ask every member to:

  • Treat every person with dignity and respect
  • Welcome newcomers with patience and encouragement
  • Listen before responding
  • Assume good intentions whenever possible
  • Celebrate others' successes
  • Offer constructive feedback with empathy

Behaviors That Are Not Acceptable

The following behaviors are not acceptable:

  • Insults or personal attacks
  • Harassment or bullying
  • Hate speech or discrimination
  • Threatening language
  • Intimidation
  • Public humiliation
  • Unwanted romantic or sexual advances
  • Continuing contact after someone has asked to be left alone

Respecting boundaries is an essential act of kindness.

Protect Our Shared Spaces

Every KindnessGuild space should feel safe, welcoming, and inspiring.

Help us maintain that environment.

Content to Avoid

Please avoid posting:

  • Explicit or sexual content
  • Spam or repetitive messages
  • Misleading information
  • Unauthorized advertising or promotions
  • Content intended to provoke or divide

Context Matters

Context matters. Something appropriate in a casual conversation may not belong in a serious discussion or volunteer workspace.

Please be thoughtful when sharing:

  • Personal information
  • Sensitive topics
  • Political discussions
  • Graphic content
  • Humor that may exclude or embarrass others

Ask Yourself

If you're unsure whether something belongs, ask yourself:

Does this contribute to connection, kindness, or learning?

If not, consider sharing something else.

Turn Conflict into Growth

Disagreement is natural. Disrespect is not.

When Conflict Happens

When conflict happens:

  • Listen to understand before trying to be understood
  • Ask questions rather than making assumptions
  • Focus on ideas instead of individuals
  • Remain calm, even if others do not
  • Avoid public shaming or encouraging others to take sides
  • Choose private conversations when appropriate
  • Be willing to apologize
  • Be willing to forgive

Thoughtful Communication

Words have lasting impact. Take a moment before replying, especially during emotional conversations.

Sometimes the kindest response is giving yourself time before responding.

If a situation becomes difficult to resolve, contact a moderator or member of the KindnessGuild team.

Choose Compassion Over Convenience

Being part of KindnessGuild means doing more than simply avoiding harmful behavior.

Ask yourself:

"What action would help another person feel seen, respected, and encouraged?"

Then choose that action.

Kindness often requires patience. Sometimes it means helping without recognition. Sometimes it means admitting you're wrong. Sometimes it means making room for another person's perspective.

Our goal isn't merely to avoid hurting people. Our goal is to actively make people's lives a little brighter.

Honesty and Integrity

Kindness also means acting with integrity.

Members should never:

  • Attempt to deceive or defraud KindnessGuild
  • Misrepresent projects, donations, or volunteer work
  • Abuse community resources
  • Exploit the generosity of other members
  • Impersonate another individual or organization

Kindness grows where trust exists.

Reporting Concerns

If you experience or witness behavior that conflicts with this Code of Conduct, please let us know.

You can report concerns by:

  • Emailing conduct@kindnessguild.org
  • Submitting a report through the KindnessGuild Community Portal
  • Contacting a KindnessGuild moderator or staff member directly

Reports are handled confidentially whenever possible. We protect the privacy of everyone involved and investigate concerns fairly and respectfully.

Where This Code Applies

This Code of Conduct applies across all KindnessGuild spaces, including:

  • The KindnessGuild website
  • Community forums and discussion spaces
  • Volunteer programs
  • Events, both online and in person
  • GitHub repositories and open-source projects
  • Social platforms managed by KindnessGuild
  • Official communication channels
  • Partner initiatives operated under the KindnessGuild community

These expectations apply equally to volunteers, contributors, moderators, staff, partners, and leadership.

We may also take action when behavior outside official KindnessGuild spaces has a direct impact on the safety or well-being of our community.

Our Promise

KindnessGuild exists because we believe small acts of kindness can create meaningful human connection.

Every message, every conversation, every project, and every interaction is an opportunity to make someone feel welcomed, valued, and less alone.

This Code of Conduct isn't about enforcing rules. It's about protecting the kind of community we're building together—a place where people choose empathy over ego, generosity over indifference, and connection over division.

Thank you for helping make KindnessGuild a place where kindness isn't just encouraged—it's how we work, grow, and belong together.
